IC design houses are cautious about Android smartphone shipments in 2023

With Samsung Electronics likely to revise its 2023 smartphone sales target downwards, sources at the Taiwan-based IC design firm say Oppo, Vivo, and other China-based brands are also planning to launch next year. Android smartphone shipments are expected to disappoint. Samsung has already cut orders for its Galaxy A-series smartphones due to poor sales in 2022 so far.

The number of units next year could at best be about the same as in 2022, sources say. Moreover, the market penetration of 5G smartphones has been disappointing this year and could continue to do so in 2023, sources said. MediaTek previously estimated global market penetration for his 5G handsets at just 55% in 2023, compared to around 50% in 2022. India may be the only market with relatively high revenue growth over the next year.

Poor sales of its best-selling series could lead carriers to cut overall shipment targets next year. There are growing concerns that the chinese smartphone makers such as Oppo and Vivo are also remaining cautious about ordering new models due to be launched next year due to weak demand, the sources said. Many research institutes are pessimistic about the global mobile phone market in 2023, citing negative macro factors.

But China’s sales prospects are closing in on the US. and Europe remain unknown, the mobile SoC specialist was quoted as saying in an earlier report.
