Global automotive display shipments are expected to reach 197 million units in 2022, up 7.2% on year, and will continue to grow to 288 million units by 2027 with a CAGR of 7.9% over the five-year period, according to DIGITIMES Research's figures.
The rising global inflation exacerbated by the war between Ukraine and Russia and China's strict COVID-19 containment measures has slowed the auto market's recovery in 2022. However, as automakers continue pushing development of electric vehicles (EVs) and autonomous driving systems, the number of displays equipped in a vehicle will grow and lead to rising usage of panels.
Central control centers and dashboards are the top-2 applications for automotive displays, but the shipment share of central control center displays will decline 0.6pp-1.7pp a year in 2022-22027 because of its saturated penetration rate. The shipment share of dashboard displays will remain at 33-34% during the period, while head-up displays (HUDs) and digital rearview mirror are applications expected to have the biggest potential for growth, DIGITIMES Research's data show.
Cars that are natively equipped with a HUD and a digital rearview mirror will mostly be mid-range to high-end models in the foreseeable future, but the two applications' penetration rates will continue picking up. Augmented-reality (AR) HUDs will become high-end equipment for many advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) in 2022-2023 as they will be able project the information gathered by ADAS directly onto the windshield.
In the past, AR-HUDs could only use DLP displays by Texas Instruments (TI), but many companies have already achieved the effect of AR-HUD with TFT LCD panel, which is expected to further boost the penetration of HUDs.
Digital rearview mirrors are mostly used in large-size vehicles at the moment, while the penetration in standard passenger vehicles will not start rising until 2025-2026 when autonomous driving technologies are more advanced. HUDs and digital rearview mirrors are expected to enjoy a CAGR of around 18-20% for the period from 2022-2027, while their shares of overall automotive display shipments are expected to reach 9.1% and 2.3%, respectively.
