Chip shortage a bottleneck for Tata's EV ambition

The top electric vehicle (EV) brand by sale units in India, Tata Motors, has announced the Curvv, a concept vehicle based on a new EV-first platform, a step forward to offering up to 10 EVs by 2025.

According to The Economic Times and The Week, Tata Motors revealed the Curvv concept EV, which will be able to accommodate more batteries and is expected to have a driving range of 400-500 kilometers. The Curvv EV is slated to be launched within two years.

Shailesh Chandra, managing director of Tata Motors Passenger Vehicle and Tata Passenger Electric Mobility, said that the demand for its EV models far exceeds supply. Tata Motors estimates the sales of Tata's EVs for fiscal 2023 (April 2022 to March 2023) could double the number of fiscal 2022, and the only bottleneck may be the chip supply. Tata Motors hopes to increase its EV share of passenger vehicle sales from 1.89% for fiscal 2021 and 5.15% for fiscal 2022 to 10-15% for fiscal 2023, which would amount to 50,000-75,000 EV sales.

Tata said it sold 19,106 EVs in fiscal 2022, up 353% from 4,216 in fiscal 2021. According to Vahan Dashboard, Tata Motors and Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles have a combined market share of about 90% in the first three months of 2022.

Currently, Tata Motors has two EV models, Nexon EV and Tigor EV, which are based on designs for ICE-powered vehicles and have far lower driving ranges than Curvv. Fortune cited Chandra as saying that Tata Motors is on track to provide 10 EV models by 2025, and the next step would be to offer a pure EV-based architecture.
