Taiwan IC design houses gearing up for 5G smartphone market boom

Taiwan-based IC design houses are gearing up for a boom in 5G smartphone shipments starting the fourth quarter of 2020, according to industry sources.

Global 5G smartphone shipments will peak for 2020 in the fourth quarter, said the sources, adding that shipments are expected to continue ramping up throughout 2021.

Mobile processor vendor MediaTek, display driver IC company Novatek Microelectronics, networking chipmaker Realtek Semiconductor, RF component specialist RichWave Technology, fingerprint sensor suppliers Egis Technology (EgisTec) and FocalTech System, power management IC designers Leadtrend Technology, Fitipower Integrated Technology and Global Mixed-mode Technology (GMT), USB chip supplier Genesys Logic, and ZillTek Technology specializing in MEMS microphones are all poised to enjoy a particularly strong fourth quarter of 2020, thanks to a strong pull-in of orders for 5G smartphones, the sources indicated.
