MCU makers poised to see significant growths in March and 2Q21

Taiwan-based MCU suppliers are likely to see their revenues increase significantly in March and second-quarter 2021 thanks to capacity support from wafer foundry houses and IC backend service firms, according to industry sources.

Although some suppliers have already raised their quotes to reflect rising production costs, their revenues did not experience significant gains in February as they had failed to ramp up shipments in the wake of tight supply from foundry partners, said the sources.

These firms include Holtek Semiconductor, Elan Microelectronics, Sonix Technology, Hycon Technology, Megawin Technology, Nyquest Technology, and Weltrend Semiconductor, the sources noted.

With the MCU sector entering the traditional peak season in March and most foundry and backend service houses beginning to ramp up their shipments, most MCU makers are likely to see their revenues hit record highs in March and grow 30-40% sequentially in the second quarter, said the sources.

Besides, MCU suppliers' price hikes implemented recently will also begin to reflect in revenue growths in March and the coming months, the sources added.

The sources said many international IC vendors have shifted their MCU capacity for automotive chips to support the global auto industry, leaving a vast space in household appliances, consumer electronics, and surveillance sectors up for grab by Taiwanese MCU suppliers.
